|The Trojans opened up sectional play at Greenfield-Central last night, defeating the Mt. Vernon Marauders 8-5. New Castle jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off of hits by Zak Kellogg and Tyler Smith. However, in the bottom of the first, Mt. Vernon snagged a 2-1 lead off of 3 hits.New Castle pieced together some solid hitting in the second, getting four runs, which was capped off by a Kellogg double that scored two. The Trojans would add another run in the 3rd inning, and two more in the 4th, making it 8-2.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Marauders showed they wouldn’t go down easy. After 6.2 innings of work and the score at 8-3 with 2 outs, Malott was replaced on the mound by Nick Jones. Mt.Vernon added two more runs, but Jones was able to close out the game, securing the 8-5 victory.
New Castle will face Anderson in the semifinals on Saturday at 5:30 PM. Admission is $6 for the evening, or $9 for the rest of the tournament.
