The Lady Trojans have had a breakthrough season in 2013-14. Currently 13-2, New Castle has guaranteed their first winning season since 2010-11, when the team went 16-5. The Lady Trojans have won six of their last seven games, rebounding from a tough loss at Anderson with consecutive victories on the road at Kokomo and Westfield. Both wins proved to be significant for New Castle. The 43-36 victory over Kokomo marked the first time in program history that New Castle has won at Memorial Gym. The Trojans visited an 11-1 Westfield team that was ranked in the top 10 in 4A on January 22nd, and came away with a big victory (53-48).
After a week off due to another weather-related cancellation on Saturday, the Trojans travel to Mt. Vernon to take on the defending 3A state champion Marauders (12-4), who will be a new addition to the sectional field this year and a conference opponent in 2014-15. Mt. Vernon has played the majority of the season without Purdue commit Erica Moore, who has been dealing with a knee injury. Mt. Vernon is coming off a 47-38 loss to Greenfield-Central, snapping a 31-game conference win streak that started in 2009.
This should be another great showdown for the Lady Trojans. A win tonight would make New Castle 6-0 against future HHC opponents on the season. The only HHC school not on the New Castle schedule for 2013-14 is Shelbyville.
